Jeppson explained to The Washington Write-up in a cell phone interview that in a way, the concept for the coin is tied to the act that produced the U.S. Mint. That act instructed the Mint on how to make coins, Jeppson explained, and was very specific.

“Our Founding Fathers preferred beliefs on their coins,” Jeppson explained. “So actually, what you see us carrying out today is making an attempt to embody the excellent of Liberty, interpreted today, in a modern day way, with recognition in honoring our earlier, recognizing that, but looking to who we are as a folks today.”

The Mint, he explained, “really preferred folks to have a conversation about Liberty.”

“Because we think it’s an important conversation for us to have, often as a People,” Jeppson explained.

Coin Globe, a numismatic magazine, has been masking on the Liberty portrait because March, William Gibbs, its handling editor, wrote in an electronic mail to The Write-up. Two federal panels recommended the style, he wrote.

When the style suggestions at first ended up announced, reaction on the Coin Globe Fb web site and in collector message boards was “mixed,” Gibbs wrote. Some folks liked what they observed, while others had grievances.

A frequent gripe, Gibbs explained, targeted on the dimensions of the stars encircling Liberty’s head.
