Comcast has added motion detection as a feature to its Xfinity wireless routers, using Wi-Fi signal analysis to sense movement near connected devices such as televisions and printers. The feature, branded WiFi Motion, sends push notifications to users and offers different sensitivity modes for when people are home, asleep, or away. The Xfinity app also displays live motion activity and a feed of recent events.
Comcast acknowledges that home size, layout, building materials, and the placement of the router and connected devices can all affect detection performance, and the company does not guarantee its accuracy. The larger privacy concern comes from Comcast's own support page, which states that information generated by WiFi Motion may be shared with third parties without further notice to the user in connection with law enforcement investigations, disputes to which Comcast is a party, or pursuant to a court order or subpoena.
How WiFi Motion Works
WiFi Motion uses existing Wi-Fi signals between the router and connected devices as a sensing layer. When radio waves travel through a space, they reflect, scatter, or absorb based on the presence and movement of people and objects. By comparing expected signal behavior with actual received signal strength and channel state information, the system infers motion without requiring cameras or dedicated sensors. The approach builds on research into Wi-Fi sensing (including the IEEE 802.11bf standard) that treats Wi-Fi networks as passive sensor networks capable of detecting presence, velocity, direction, and proximity.
Why It Matters
The deployment puts radar-like sensing capability into millions of consumer households through equipment they already rent or own. Unlike traditional security cameras, Wi-Fi sensing works through walls and does not require line of sight, and it can detect individuals who carry no devices. The third-party sharing disclosure means motion data — potentially revealing daily routines, occupancy patterns, and household activity — can be disclosed to law enforcement or in civil proceedings without a warrant directed at the user, and without additional notice beyond the support page terms.

Comcast is shipping a surveillance capability disguised as a convenience feature. The technical limitations (layout dependence, no performance guarantee) are real, but the data-sharing terms are the story: they convert a home network into a sensor feed that Comcast can hand over in legal proceedings the user may not even know about. The IEEE 802.11bf standard still lacks mandated privacy controls, and this rollout shows how sensing features can reach consumers before those safeguards exist.
