Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai has installed a clear split at Google DeepMind: Koray Kavukcuoglu is now senior vice president, running day-to-day operations for Gemini models, frontier AI research, and the Gemini app and developer teams — reporting directly to Pichai. Cofounder Demis Hassabis becomes chair of Google DeepMind and Alphabet chief scientist, stepping back from operational control while continuing to lead Isomorphic Labs. The changes were announced on August 5, 2026, shared with employees in notes from both executives, and take effect immediately.
Kavukcuoglu had been DeepMind’s CTO and remains Google’s Chief AI Architect. Hassabis, who worked with him for more than 13 years, said AGI feels “close at hand” and that the new chair role lets him focus on the “big picture.” Separately, after 27 years at Google, Jeff Dean and senior fellow Sanjay Ghemawat are leaving to launch an independent public benefit corporation focused on machine learning and scientific discovery, with Alphabet as a founding investor and Cloud partner. Pichai framed the move as a way to “accelerate all this work and stay focused on the AI frontier” while giving Hassabis room to shape AGI strategy.

In the same announcement, Pichai said the Gemini app has reached 950 million+ monthly users and that Gemma open models have surpassed 900 million+ downloads. He also pointed to strong demand for Flash, a live Cyber model, and upcoming model releases. Hassabis separately said the company is making progress on new models, including Gemini 4.
On Alphabet’s latest earnings call, Pichai said nearly 90% of Fortune 100 companies use Gemini Enterprise — a commercial signal that sits beside the frontier-model race rather than replacing it.
Why it matters
The reorganization consolidates model training, the consumer Gemini app, and developer tooling under a single product-oriented executive who reports to the CEO. That structure treats Gemini more like a product group than a research lab — and it arrives while industry reporting says OpenAI and Anthropic have shipped newer frontier systems in 2026, after Google’s Gemini 3 push in late 2025.
