Google's Gemini app has officially surpassed 1 billion monthly active users, CEO Sundar Pichai announced Monday, making it the 14th Google product to reach that threshold and the fastest-growing in the company's history. The milestone comes just weeks after OpenAI's ChatGPT crossed the same mark, signaling a tightening race between the two dominant AI assistants.
The announcement, made via Pichai's X post and a Google blog update, reflects a steep adoption curve: Gemini grew from 350 million monthly users in April 2025 to 750 million by December, 900 million at Google I/O in May 2026, and now 1 billion in August. Daily active users have tripled over the past year, according to the company's Q2 earnings call.
How people are using Gemini
Google shared fresh usage data alongside the milestone. Voice interaction has become the primary mode for nearly two-thirds of users: 63% now talk directly to Gemini, with busy parents 43% more likely to use voice for everyday tasks. One in five Gemini Live sessions goes beyond voice, incorporating live camera feeds or screen sharing for real-time problem solving — popular among DIYers and students. Students upload attachments in 38% of school-related requests.
Creative workloads are heavy: Gemini generates more than 150 million images per day across image, video, and audio tools, a volume Google says helps small businesses produce marketing materials in one place. On Android, the assistant can automate actions across 40-plus popular apps for tasks like booking rides or reserving tables. The iOS base now exceeds 100 million active users, and macOS power users prompt roughly twice as often as users on other surfaces.
Context: the race to a billion
ChatGPT reached 1 billion monthly users in June, though OpenAI did not announce it until an August 6 blog post. OpenAI spokesperson Lindsay McCallum said weekly active users hit 1 billion in July, up from 900 million in February — a growth pace that has slowed compared to ChatGPT's early trajectory. Google's February disclosure put Gemini at 750 million monthly users; the Q2 earnings call in late July reported 950 million. The two platforms now sit at comparable scale, though direct comparison is complicated by differing metrics (monthly vs. weekly) and the fact that Google's figure refers specifically to the standalone Gemini app, not AI Overviews in Search.
Those Overviews, powered by Gemini models inside Google Search, reach an estimated 2 billion users monthly across 200-plus countries. Combined, Gemini touches more people each month than any other AI system, though most of the Search audience encounters it passively rather than by choosing a chatbot.
Why it matters: enterprise and economics
The consumer milestone is backed by enterprise momentum. Google Cloud revenue reached $20 billion in Q1 2026, up 63% year-over-year, driven by Gemini-powered demand. Revenue from products built on Google's generative AI models grew nearly 800% in the same quarter. More than 120,000 enterprises use Gemini, including 95% of the top 20 global SaaS companies. Gemini Enterprise counts 8 million paid seats across 2,800 companies, with quarter-over-quarter monthly active user growth of 40%.
Serving costs have dropped 78% across 2025, a 33x reduction in energy per query from May 2024 to May 2025, making the economics of billion-user scale structurally viable. Subscription revenue from Gemini reached $1.2 billion in 2025, quadruple the prior year. The API processes 16 billion tokens per minute with 2.4 million active developers and 85 billion monthly requests.
Our take
Google's distribution advantage — preinstallation on 3-plus billion Android devices — turns a product milestone into a structural moat. The 100 million iOS users prove cross-platform pull, but the Android default position means Gemini's next hundred million users arrive largely without a download decision.
