SpaceXAI, the AI division formed from Elon Musk's xAI after its merger with SpaceX, has launched Grok Bot in beta — a product it describes as "always-on AI teammates" that get their own persistent cloud computers and can sign into a user's existing tools to finish multi-step jobs without constant supervision. The product became available August 11, 2026, for subscribers on three premium tiers: SuperGrok Heavy ($300 per month), Cursor Ultra ($200 per month), and Cursor Premium Teams ($120 per seat per month). Enterprise customers are directed to a waitlist.
The core architectural difference from most agent products is that each Bot runs on a shared, persistent cloud virtual machine equipped with a browser, filesystem, and terminal. Bots can operate applications and websites that lack clean APIs or Model Context Protocol integrations, using computer-use capabilities to click, type, and navigate the same interfaces a human would. Work continues when the user closes their laptop; the Bot returns only when it needs approval or has delivered a finished result.
What's new
- Persistent cloud computer: All of a user's Bots share one account-scoped VM. They share files, browser sessions, and app logins, enabling handoffs without repeated setup. Each Bot gets its own screen on that computer, so several can work in parallel.
- Teammate model: Users message a Bot like a colleague — give it a task, context, and tool access. Bots retain memory, preferences, and learned routines across conversations. They can message each other, share context in threads or group chats, and pass ownership of tasks.
- Learning by demonstration: A Bot can watch a user perform a multi-step workflow once, save it as a routine, incorporate corrections, and re-run it on a schedule or on demand.
- Model backbone: Grok Bot runs on Grok 4.5, SpaceXAI's frontier model (knowledge cutoff February 1, 2026) priced at $2.00 per 1M input tokens and $6.00 per 1M output tokens on the API, with configurable reasoning effort.
- Platforms: Desktop apps for macOS, Windows, and Linux (a Linux build is posted), plus iOS. Android is listed as "coming soon."
Why it matters
Grok Bot arrives as the industry converges on "digital labor" — agents that do knowledge work rather than draft it. Anthropic's Claude Cowork (launched January 2026, expanded to web and mobile in July) and OpenAI's Workspace Agents and Codex computer-use capabilities target similar workflows. SpaceXAI's differentiation is the shared persistent computer and the distribution strategy: Grok Bot is not sold standalone but bundled into subscriptions customers already pay for, across two companies now visibly interlocked. The Cursor acquisition ($60 billion in stock, announced June 2026, closing reported imminent) provides the download infrastructure, onboarding flow, and sales channel. For buyers, the per-seat cost ($120–$200/month) sits well below a loaded salary for the entry-level operations roles the demos illustrate — sales outbound, CRM hygiene, invoice processing, bug reproduction — but the economic test will be whether continuous agent usage stays within included token limits.
Our take
The shared-computer design is a genuine architectural choice, not just marketing: it solves the credential-and-context handoff problem that plagues multi-agent setups, but it also concentrates risk — one compromised VM exposes every Bot's sessions and stored logins. SpaceXAI says the computer is isolated to the account, not the Bot, which is the right boundary, but enterprises will want audit logs and granular revocation before putting production credentials on it.
