Google Research puts the atlas at more than 166,000 neurons and about 125 million synaptic connections, calling it the largest brain map by neuron count released so far.

Within days, secondary coverage highlighted a Georgia Tech master’s student who said he wired that open connectome into a Minecraft sandbox with help from a frontier coding model. That second thread is interesting if the code lands; it is not yet a finished scientific product. The durable news is the public MaleCNS resource and how AI reconstruction made a decade of imaging usable.

As of this writing, Brocker has not independently verified a public repository, peer-reviewed methods note, or OpenAI product page that confirms the model name and the simulation’s fidelity.
  • Smith’s own framing, as quoted in that coverage — V1 still under development, help from GPT-6 Astra, code/mod coming soon — means the game demo should be treated as early engineering theater until weights, dynamics choices (for example leaky integrate-and-fire assumptions), and sensory encoding are inspectable.
  • Whether the Minecraft agent uses the full ~166k-neuron graph, a pruned visuomotor subgraph, or a loosely inspired controller is not established in primary Google/Janelia materials.
  • Behavioral motion in a block world does not imply subjective experience; connectome-driven animation is not evidence of consciousness.

Our take

Lead with MaleCNS, not Matrix memes. The story that will still matter in six months is an open, sex-compared fly CNS plus Google’s reconstruction stack — the kind of artifact labs can actually query. The Minecraft weekend project is a useful illustration that engineering glue is getting cheaper; it is not proof that whole-brain simulation is now a hobbyist commodity. Wait for the code, then judge how much biology survived the port.
