On September 23, 2026, OpenAI announced a new agreement that gives Airbnb's engineering and product development teams broader access to its frontier models, with GPT-6 Astra among them. The deal extends a relationship in which Airbnb has already relied on Codex and earlier OpenAI models such as GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra, and Luna to run an in-house assistant that helps staff write software and spin up remote AI agents.

The new agreement provides Airbnb with broader access to OpenAI models through both OpenAI APIs and Amazon Bedrock. OpenAI says the move comes as adoption of GPT-6 Astra accelerates among developers and enterprises, including many that were already drawn to the price-performance and efficiency gains of GPT-5.6 Terra and Luna.

Airbnb's early experience with GPT-6 Astra extends past coding, and the results there have been strong as well. Engineers use it to chase down stubborn bugs, work through system design questions, and generate ideas for how to approach engineering problems. When Airbnb tried the model on strategy documents and other work outside of coding, one user said it took just three to four passes to get output they considered impressive, whereas other models needed more than 20 rounds.

"Our development teams are shipping roughly 80% more features than a year ago. OpenAI's frontier models, including GPT-6 Astra, are a key element of our developer tooling that helps us keep that momentum going and build better products faster," said Ahmad Al-Dahle, Chief Technology at Airbnb.

"Airbnb has been using AI to rethink how software gets built, and expanding access to models like GPT-6 Astra gives its teams even more powerful tools to move from ideas to production faster. We're proud to deepen our work together as Airbnb puts OpenAI capabilities to work across engineering and the experiences it builds for millions of guests and hosts," said Dali Rajic, Chief Revenue Officer at OpenAI.

Airbnb also applies OpenAI models well beyond engineering, across marketplace functions that include search, fraud detection, support for guests and hosts, and the handling of insurance claims. That spread of AI and machine learning across the marketplace lets the company read guest intent more sharply, flag suspicious content or claims, help travelers whose plans shift, and speed up insurance payouts to hosts.

Airbnb is pulling more of the trip into a single app, from homes and services to experiences, airport pickups and car rentals. The frontier models give the teams behind those features a stronger toolkit to build quickly and test new ideas.

Why it matters

The agreement signals growing enterprise adoption of OpenAI's latest model generation through multiple cloud channels, including Amazon Bedrock. For Airbnb, the expanded access supports a broader product strategy that aims to unify travel services in a single app, where AI-driven features across search, trust, and support become competitive differentiators.

Our take

Frontier model access is turning into infrastructure for product-led companies, and this deal puts Airbnb's tooling at the center of that shift. The 80% feature velocity figure is vendor-attributed and worth watching: independent replication at other enterprises would show whether GPT-6 Astra's gains are broadly reproducible or specific to Airbnb's codebase and workflows. The Bedrock channel also matters — it shows OpenAI models reaching enterprises through more than one route.
