On June 12, 2026, Anthropic suspended Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after the U.S. government applied export controls to both models. Access returned on July 1, 2026 after those controls were lifted on June 30. This piece is the pause/redeploy timeline — not another dual-track explainer.
Confirmed timeline (Anthropic primary)
- June 9, 2026 — Fable 5 (general) and Mythos 5 (Glasswing/trusted) launched.
- June 12, 2026 — U.S. export controls applied to Fable 5 and Mythos 5. Anthropic says the order required restricting access to foreign nationals; with no reliable real-time nationality check, it suspended access to both models for all users.
- Trigger (Anthropic) — The directive followed government awareness of an Amazon researchers’ report: a jailbreak/bypass of Fable 5’s safeguards that, in one case, produced code demonstrating how a vulnerability could be exploited. Anthropic later said the technique did not expose unique Mythos-level cyber capabilities and trained an improved classifier before redeploy.
- June 26, 2026 — U.S. government approval restored Mythos 5 access for a set of U.S. organizations (partial reopen before the full lift).
- June 30, 2026 — Anthropic stated export controls on Fable 5 and Mythos 5 had been lifted (announced in Redeploying Fable 5).
- July 1, 2026 — Access restored: Fable 5 globally on Claude Platform, Claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork. Mythos 5 restored for the approved U.S. set, with further Glasswing expansion still coordinated with government.
Confirmed redeploy conditions (not unconditional GA)
- For Pro, Max, Team, and select Enterprise plans, Fable 5 was included for up to 50% of weekly usage limits through July 7, then via usage credits (Enterprise footnotes differ by seat type).
- Anthropic said it would re-enable access on AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry as quickly as possible — i.e., cloud marketplace restore was not same-day with Claude.ai/Platform.
- Anthropic continues coordinating to expand Mythos 5 beyond the June 26 U.S.-org set to the broader domestic and international Glasswing partner group.

Why it matters
Frontier launches now include operational and policy friction — not only benchmarks. A model can lead on day one and still vanish from customer workflows for weeks under export-control pressure. Same summer Google was reorganizing DeepMind for shipping speed (cadence piece).
Our take
In our view, the suspension shows Mythos-class capability forced a harder release surface: safety classifiers, partner gates, and formal export controls can interrupt GA as abruptly as a bad eval — and the July restore was phased, not a clean flip of a switch.
