Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi), Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, NVIDIA, and Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) inaugurated the UGM Indosat NVIDIA AI Technology Center (NVAITC) in Yogyakarta on August 14, 2026. The facility is the country's first university-based AI technology center, established under the national AI Center of Excellence initiative to align government, industry, and academia around Indonesia's most pressing challenges.

The center runs on NVIDIA's full-stack AI platform and GPU Merdeka, Indosat's sovereign GPU-as-a-service infrastructure. That combination gives UGM researchers, students, and external innovators enterprise-grade accelerated computing, development frameworks, pretrained models — including NVIDIA Nemotron open models — and technical mentorship. Minister Meutya Hafid said the initiative reflects a long-term vision to position Indonesia as a nation that develops and contributes AI innovations, not only adopts them. Indosat CEO Vikram Sinha emphasized that no Indonesian should be left behind in the AI era, while NVIDIA's Marc Hamilton highlighted the potential for local talent to drive impact in healthcare, agriculture, and disaster preparedness.

Three named projects define the center's initial scope. In healthcare, a team led by dr. Dian Kesumapramudya Nurputra at UGM's Faculty of Medicine is developing eNose-TB, an AI-powered electronic screening system that analyzes breath samples to detect tuberculosis. Indonesia records over 1 million new TB cases annually, and detection in rural areas has been limited by equipment and specialist shortages. The goal is affordable, fast screening reachable at remote clinics without a specialist or expensive lab.

In agriculture — which employs nearly 30% of Indonesia's workforce — SmartAgri combines satellite imagery, ground sensor data, and local farming knowledge through multimodal AI and edge computing to deliver precision irrigation and crop-management recommendations for smallholders. For disaster response, Tech4Disaster is building a geospatial AI platform on NVIDIA accelerated computing to process satellite and sensor data at speed, giving communities and emergency responders earlier warning and better situational awareness. Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire and faces more natural disaster risk than almost anywhere on earth.

Why it matters

The center addresses a structural gap NVIDIA itself names: Indonesia's research community has long had insight into local problems but lacked the compute, models, and infrastructure to turn that insight into deployable systems. Anchoring sovereign GPU capacity inside a public university ties the investment to three concrete national problems — TB screening, smallholder agriculture, and disaster early warning — rather than an unspecified “AI excellence” slogan.

This is a partnership announcement, not a product result. The news that holds is access: GPU Merdeka plus Nemotron weights inside UGM, with three projects already named. Breath-based TB screening, smallholder irrigation advice, and geospatial disaster tools will either produce field evidence or remain brochure copy. Until those systems ship with dates, accuracy claims, and who can use them, treat the launch as infrastructure politics — useful, but unproven.
